Drum roll please............
Here are the books that we will sink our teeth into this year:
Twice Freed by Patricia St. John
The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White
The Door in the Wall by Marguerite de Angeli
The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Bruchko by Bruce Olson
I have spent the summer praying and reading in preparation for choosing this year's book list. I have tried to select a variety of genres and writing styles, but ultimately wanted the year to be spent reading really good books.
I cannot say enough how much I have enjoyed engaging in lively discussions over wonderful literature with this age group! My desire is for this class to be very interactive and discussion driven, therefore it is VERY IMPORTANT for your student to keep up with the reading assignments. I strongly encourage you to print the reading schedule that will soon be available on the CHEC website, so that you will know what the assignments are and when you will need to have the next book ready. I have tried really hard to make the assignments feasible for this age group, but please do not hesitate if you see your child struggling with a particular book, to step in and do some reading aloud with them.
There will be an opportunity to turn in a book report on the first class day in January and we will end the year with a creative project covering one of the books that we read this year.
The students will be allowed to pick the book and the way in which they would like to present the material. It is a wonderful way to express their individuality and unique giftings. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Looking so forward to this year,
Beth Price
